More than a hundred Cornish farmers gathered at Trebudannon, near St. Column, to meet the Labour member of Parliament for St. Austell and Newquay, Noah Law. The talking points were wide ranging and included farm land being bought and taken out of food production, the Government’s woeful strategy for farming as a whole and the National strategic necessity of food self-sufficiency. However, the main focus of the meeting was on Labour’s new Inheritance Tax on farmers and its crippling effects on family farms. Mr. Law seemed sincere in his desire to get the policy changed. What chance does he stand with this urban cabinet divorced from the countryside in their Westminster bubble, and with hardened Blairites saying “it’s an industry we could do without”?
The Reform UK South East Cornwall Branch enthusiastically supports the “No farmers, no food” movement. We are fully aware of the need for a greater self-sufficiency in food production for Great Britain and fair, trading agreements with other countries that don’t disadvantage our own farmers.
